Premium Tuna Fetches for $100,000+

For sushi lovers the extreme price is a bad sign—it could mean that our favorite sushi fish is on the brink of extinction from over-fishing. It could also mean that fisheries are becoming more regulated, as we find out that we are depleting fish populations.

According to the AP:

Two sushi bar owners paid more than $100,000 for a Japanese bluefin
tuna at a Tokyo fish auction Monday, several times the average price
and the highest in nearly a decade, market officials said.

Due to growing concerns over the impact of commercial fishing on the
bluefin variety’s survival, members of international tuna conservation
organizations, including Japan, have agreed to cut their bluefin catch
quota for 2009 by 20 percent to 22,000 tons.

The 282-pound (128-kilogram) premium tuna caught off the northern
coast of Oma fetched 9.63 million yen ($104,700), the highest since
2001, when another Japanese bluefin tuna brought an all-time record of
20 million yen, market official Takashi Yoshida said.

Yoshida said the extravagant purchase — about $370 per pound ($817 per
kilogram) — went to a Hong Kong sushi bar owner and his Japanese
competitor who reached a peaceful settlement to share the big fish.
The Hong Kong buyer also paid the highest price at last year’s new
year event at Tokyo’s Tsukiji market, the world’s largest fish seller,
which holds near-daily auctions.

I love eating at sushi bars, but I catch myself worrying about the fisheries and how humans are destroying one of our important renewable resources. At this rate, pretty soon all the sushi bars will be just bars.

Riding The Bus To Work Around Orange County, CA

Let’s face it. If you live in Southern California, the only way you’re going to make it, survive, do anything is drive your car. The thing is, I hate driving. When I’m sitting in traffic, I can’t do anything. I just have to sit there and rot. I’ve been running my car off veggie oil for sometime now, and I wanted to ride the bus to work one day and give it a shot.

Here’s my experience:

help our friends at eco lips and help your lips

Pulled from SavvyWallet.com

Cedar Rapids, Iowa based Eco Lips Organic Lip Balm is located at the heart of the flood that hid the Midwest recently. Water rushed through company headquarters, which contained its sales, production and fulfillment divisions. Thankfully, employees had already moved most of the production and manufacturing equipment to dry land but unfortunately Eco Lips lost the remaining items in the building. Despite their losses, however, the company is up and running in a new space and trying hard to make up its losses.

In hopes of rebuilding their company and city, Eco Lips has launched a modest promotion on www.ecolips.com.

Tips on collecting waste vegetable oil

1. Ask before you collect. Some stores are cracking down on people stealing oil. They usually have a contract with a collection agency, and there is a certain amount they need to collect. If the amount is off by a lot, this is a red flag for restaurants illegally dumping waste oil. So, if you’re going to secretly take it, don’t take more than 4 gallons.

2. Avoid Mondays. Most collection companies, collect on Mondays. The best time is on the weekends, when more oil is used. Go in late saturday night, or early sunday morning.

3. Bring extra heavy duty gloves. Sometimes gloves rip or they melt in the sun

4. Bring a headlamp and extra batteries. Collecting oil in the dark is dangerous.

5. Towel to wipe down. Keep it clean, and your source will be kept clean

6. Avoid large chains. I.E. Burger King, KFC., etc

7. Go to Japanese and Italian places

8. Don’t take more than you need and don’t get greedy

The Godfather of Oily Mess

I was sitting at my friends kitchen in San Francisco and this painting caught my eye.

I was born in 1983. Reagan’s term lasted from 1981-1989. During his term as president he was adamant about finding oil to sustain our nations’ energy demand. In a 1986 NY Times article he ordered to continue the purchase of crude oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He wanted to purchase the oil, when the prices were low.

Some would argue, he pushed our nation to search for oil and not depend on foreign sources. Some would blame him for the mess he has created. I read an article: What would Reagan Do About Energy? and it speculated what Reagan would have done if he was president today.

As for me? I’m not too certain about the facts, but I know one thing for certain. Domestic oil and/or Foreign oil people are still fighting wars and destroying societies, disrupting the peace, and killing our environment.
