As the weather gets warmer, more people will frequent zoos and aquariums. I have already been to my local zoo twice this week! But every time I go, I watch adults let their children taunt the animals. WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW THAT BEHAVIOR?? Haven’t you seen what happens? (Re: tiger mauling in SF). It takes a lot for me to bite my tongue; soon I may start calling you all out for standing by while your child screams “hellllloooooo beeeeaaarrrrr” at a sleeping grizzly.
I truly appreciate all that zoos do for animals and research and humans, but it is important to remember that those animals don’t have much of a choice in the matter. They can’t always hide from us and they can’t always be “on.” This is not a circus, folks. Keep your kids from yelling at sleeping lions, throwing things into the moats protecting us from tigers and pounding on the glass separating us from giant gorillas. You probably want to remind them not to jump into the polar bear enclosure, too …
And please – keep in mind your behavior when you visit your next zoo – kids aren’t the only ones causing a raucus for those animals!
